Look In · Lesson 3 of 5

Repentance

Why? Confession names the sin; repentance turns from it. This lesson helps them move from feeling sorry to real change, and to partner with God in uprooting what they confessed.

Connection

As you get started, catch up on how y’all are doing since you last met. Celebrate how God has been at work in your lives. Using the Galatians 5 passage from last week, take time to practice confession of sin.

Vision

Confession names the sin; repentance turns from it. Repentance is more than feeling bad. It’s a change of mind, heart and direction: turning away from sin and toward God. And the Bible promises that when we repent, times of refreshing come from the Lord.

Biblical Foundations

Acts 3:19 ", then, and to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."

2 Corinthians 7:10 "Godly sorrow brings that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death."

Matthew 3:8 "Produce in keeping with repentance."

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What's the difference between feeling sorry about sin and true repentance?
  2. How would you describe the difference between confession and repentance?
  3. How do you think these work together to help us grow in godliness?

Modeling

For the Leader: Share your own experience with repentance. Describe a time when God led you to genuine repentance, the process you went through, and the growth you experienced as a result.

Practice

We want to move beyond acknowledgment of sin to genuine repentance. For the things you confessed today, how can you partner with God to see these sins uprooted from your life? How do you bear fruit in keeping with repentance?
